What is the difference between padel and tennis balls?

At first glance, padel balls hardly seem to differ from classic tennis balls. However, there are a few subtle differences. Just like in tennis, padel balls must be yellow or white to be allowed in official tournaments. There are also balls in other colors for recreational or training use.

Just like tennis balls, padel balls consist of a uniformly shaped, round rubber core surrounded by a protective felt layer. This can consist entirely of natural fibers - mostly sheep's wool - or of a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers, usually nylon.

In addition, padel balls are also filled with compressed air, but the internal pressure is slightly lower than tennis balls, so they are slightly slower. They are also smaller than their close relatives. The diameter of padel balls should be on average between 6.35 and 6.67 centimeters and the weight should be no less than 56 and no more than 59.4 grams. The internal pressure of the ball should be between 4.6 and 5.2 kilograms per 2.54 square centimeters. If dropped onto a hard surface from a height of 2.54 meters, the padel ball should reach a height of 135 to 145 centimeters when it bounces off. At altitudes of 1,290 meters above sea level, the ball should reach a bounce height of more than 121.92 and less than 135 centimeters.
