Tactics for Better Padel Play: Principles of Positioning

One of the great advantages of the trendy sport of padel is the fact that ball-talented athletes can quickly master the basic techniques, i.e., groundstrokes, volleys, and serves. Thus, most newcomers are able to play matches and gain initial match experience after a short time. In the first matches, the positioning of most players is still largely random. Many simply copy the positioning they know from tennis doubles – basically a step in the right direction. However, in padel, some elements of positioning cannot be fully represented by tennis tactics. So here are the basics of positioning for successful teamwork on the padel court

Deuce and Advantage side

As in tennis, the team decides before the match who plays on which side, an important decision, because it will not be changed throughout the game. In both tennis and padel, we speak of the deuce side right and the ad side left. While in tennis the (usually stronger) forehand determines the side division, in padel the backhand is more relevant to the decision. For example, if a right-handed and a left-handed player play together in tennis, both will choose their strong forehand side, so the left-handed player automatically plays on the ad side (left). In padel, the weighting is different: Since the slice backhand allows the safest return on fast serves, a right-handed and a left-handed player would position themselves exactly opposite to the tennis team: both strong forehands would be used to cover the sensitive middle, and both backhands would cover the court half towards the side glass wall. Two right-handed or two left-handed players should base their decision on who feels safer and more comfortable on which side. For further consideration, we will call the deuce side player Player A, and the ad side player Player B.

Ready position for the padel serve

The first serve in the match is decided by a rally in which the ball is played in and gently hit at least once by each player before the point is played out. The team that wins the point decides between serving or returning. The serving team decides who serves first; this order may only be changed at the beginning of another set or match tie-break. Generally, the serving team tries to occupy the net position with the serve.

Let's assume player A opens the match with their serve. They position themselves for the serve behind the service line on the right side. Their partner stands about two steps in front of the net on "their" ad court side and chooses the distance to the side glass wall so that they could intercept a longline return as a volley. With the serve, the server moves up to the net to the height of their partner, but orientates themselves a little more towards the center line. Otherwise, the middle would be very open for a deadly return from the returner. If player A serves from the ad court side for the second point, their partner also remains on the ad court side in the net position. The server moves up diagonally and positions themselves at the height of their partner on "their" deuce court side at the net. This way, the serving team immediately holds a dominant net position, possibly to score a point with a targeted volley on the return.

Ready position for returns

Both returners stand on the service line and cover their half of the court. If the returning player hits a high lob near the slice as a return, both ideally move forward in a line towards the net, as a defensive response is to be expected. If the lob is too short, both stay back and very likely expect a smash.

General Play on a Line & Angled Play in Padel

The best and therefore always most desirable position for successful padel play is the net position of both players roughly in line. This is because experienced players achieve most of their "winners" through well-placed volleys. In principle, each player is always responsible for their own side. If a player is lobbed, they are generally responsible for returning the ball by running back alone, thus leaving the common line. Their partner now has the task of effectively covering open areas as much as possible. For example, if the lob flies over Player B into the back corner of the court, Player A must already prepare to cover the middle, meaning they orient themselves more towards the center line so that the opponents do not have an easy game after the lob return by hitting a flat ball through the middle. Player B tries to regain the net position after returning the lob (ideally with a counter-lob). If this is not possible because the opponents have in the meantime taken the net position themselves and a smash is probably to be expected, Players A and B retreat in line towards the service line. In principle, the movement pattern resembles a "windshield wiper move," meaning the team always moves on a straight or diagonal line so that the middle is well covered. Because – as in tennis – one of the most difficult and therefore rarest shots is a "short cross," the primary responsibility of the player not currently active is to cover the sensitive middle.

Communication: The be-all and end-all in a padel team, as it is everywhere else

The movement patterns of successful Padel teams roughly follow the pattern described above. However, Padel is so versatile that situations regularly arise where rapid sprints or spontaneous changes of direction disrupt the basic formation. In this case, it makes sense to calm the game with a lob and gain time to restore the basic order. In addition, it is helpful to communicate with each other during rallies. If a player spontaneously decides to take a ball that is not clearly assigned, they should signal to their partner with a short "I got it" or "mine" that the partner does not need to react, but can use the time to quickly position themselves to "cover" the greatest danger zone as much as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

The point ends when: the ball bounces twice on the ground in one half of the court. The ball is hit into the net The ball is played directly (without prior bounce on the opponent's side) against the opponent's wall or grid A player touches the ball with their body The ball lands outside the court without having touched the wall first
The serve is repeated (a "let") if the ball touches the net but still lands correctly in the proper service box and bounces there. Even if the ball touches the glass wall after touching the net, the serve is repeated.
Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. It is played on a 20 × 10 meter court surrounded by glass and mesh walls. The walls are an active part of the game – the ball may be played off them.
No, Padel is considered one of the most accessible racket sports. The serve is underhand, the court is smaller than a tennis court, and the rackets are shorter. Most beginners can play real rallies after just a few minutes.
Usually, yes. Padel is designed as a doubles sport – two against two. Technically, singles is also possible, but in practice, this is an absolute exception.
