What is the Difference between Padel Balls and Tennis Balls?

At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be much difference between padel balls and tennis balls. But there are some. As in tennis, padel balls must be either yellow or white to be permitted at official tournaments and matches. For leisure time and training, the choice of colours is a lot broader, though.

Like tennis balls, padel balls consist of an evenly shaped, round rubber core, with a protective layer of felt around it. The felt can either be made entirely from natural fibres – mostly lamb’s wool – or a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres, usually nylon.

Another similarity is that padel balls are also filled with compressed air. However, the inside pressure is slightly lower than that of tennis balls, making them a bit slower. Padel balls are a little bit smaller than their close relatives. So, to comply with the rules of the International Padel Federation (FIP) and to be prepared at all times, buying proper padel balls makes a lot of sense. And playing with the right balls is a lot more fun anyway.

The International Padel Federation’s Padel Ball Guidelines

Apart from the uniform colour––yellow or white––the global association of padel players has defined other criteria padel balls have to meet to be allowed at official matches and tournaments. By the way, many manufacturers show on their packaging whether the padel balls are in line with the FIP’s regulations. These include size, weight and bounce.

The average diameter of padel balls must measure between 6.35 and 6.67 centimetres, and the weight should be no less than 56 and no more than 59.4 grams. The inside pressure of a padel ball has to be between 4.6 and 5.2 kilograms per square centimetre. Dropped from a height of 2.54 metres onto a concrete surface or similar, the padel ball should bounce between 135 and 145 centimetres. In altitudes of 1,290 metres or higher, the ball should bounce back more than 121.92 and less than 135 centimetres.
